4 Powerful Tips to Discuss the Word

School Culture Videos

Students experience tremendous growth as they spend time in God’s Word! Studying the Bible illuminates new revelation, changing students’ mindsets and strengthening their faith. By the end of the school year, they are walking in new levels of understanding and often eager to share what they have seen and learned through Scripture.

At BSSM, we equip our students on how to share newfound truths from the Word with others. We believe this is especially important for when they return home and have conversations with family members, friends, and even strangers who may have different biblical ideas and interpretations. In fact, we know that they will meet people who will receive from their insight and others who will disagree with what they have to share. Thus, we believe it is important to give our students keys to navigate these conversations with love and honor.

Below are four guidelines from Lead Bible Instructor, Rich Schmidt, to help your students to discuss the Bible. We pray that these tips create a safe and loving space for hearts to be expressed and understood!

1. Love is the Priority

When discussing their beliefs surrounding the Bible, we encourage you to help your students make love the priority! The people they’re talking to should always feel loved when they are sharing their viewpoints. Remind your students that they are not trying to win an argument or change others’ beliefs. Their purpose is to demonstrate God’s heart towards others and provide an opportunity for them to encounter more of His goodness. Encourage them to pursue love because it is the key to transformation and the unlocking of truth!

2. You Don’t Have All the Answers

No matter how much your students understand specific passages in the Bible, there is always greater revelation for each of them to receive; there is always room for them to learn and grow! They will never have all the answers and they get to grow their understanding through those around them. With that being said, it is so important that students learn to cultivate an ability to listen and receive to others’ insight regarding Scripture. As they listen, encourage them to remember that others may share not because they are looking for an answer, but because they are wanting to be heard and understood. Simply listening can create trust and connection.

3. Listen to the Voice of God

As your students listen to others share their biblical beliefs, you can also instruct them to tune into God’s heart and voice. He will provide insight on how to respond to others’ viewpoints or answer questions they may ask. God knows what the person really needs in the moment. While your students may want to correct their theology, God may prompt them to share something that will speak straight to their heart. Again, the goal is always to invite others to encounter more of His love and truth.

4. Posture Yourself in Humility

When your students have conversations with others about the Bible, it’s important that they remember that some people will be open and others will be closed off to hearing what they have to share. To navigate every situation they come across, encourage your students to share their ideas about Scripture from a place of humility. When they choose not to have a defensive posture, they will avoid unnecessary arguments and potential for disconnection. Humility will allow your students to truly listen and establish trust. It is through humility that they can honor others and deepen connection as they exchange ideas!

We pray your students have opportunities to engage in life-giving conversations about the Word that lead to greater encounters with love. May the fruit of their new understanding of Scripture bless each and every person they dialogue with! And as a leader, may you be filled with wisdom to equip your students to walk in love and honor.
